Subject outline
HCS3TAC focuses on techniques used by clinicians and communication researchers for analysing different facets of communication. It is organised into four modules: phonetics/phonology, morphosyntax, professional writing, discourse/pragmatics. Students will be expected to develop proficiency in some of these analytical techniques, such as detailed phonetic transcription and clinically relevant phonological analysis of speech different from their own. Other techniques (e.g. spectrography, analysis of language samples and Conversation Analysis) are in effect only introduced, with a view to students pursuing further details either in team enquiries, or in subsequent years of the course or, potentially, post-graduation.
