Subject outline

Each student undertakes an engineering design project on a topic relevant to their chosen field of specialisation after selecting a topic in consultation with supervisor(s). The project may be a design of a system, including design computations, drawings and specifications, or it may take the form of a report of an industrial or laboratory investigation or similar activity. The outcome of an investigation requires a project report of about 5000 words in length, excluding appendices, but supported by appropriate diagrams, charts, graphs and other illustrations.

Special conditions This unit represents the first semester of a two semester program. Students must enrol in ELE4EPA and ELE4EPB in consecutive semesters.

01. Apply design and problem solving skills learnt during the course to create solutions to technical problems.

Activities:
Students research their chosen project topic under the guidance of their supervisor. Students are expected to carry out extensive reading and enquiry into their chosen topic. The extent of a student's knowledge of the field is assessed through the student's submitted written and oral work. Every project is different however all projects require students to apply skills they have learnt from different aspects of their studies to solving the problem they have chosen to work on. Many projects require students to apply digital and analogue circuit design skills and to implement their designs in hardware. Other projects require application of signal processing techniques and mathematical analysis to solve a problem and to demonstrate the solution in the form of a piece of software or a simula

02. Apply good organisational skills to achieve steady progress during the course of the project.

Activities:
Students must manage their time effectively to succeed in this subject. Supervisors give general direction at weekly meetings however it is up to the students to organise their day to day activities to make progress. Students are expected to keep a log book for recording their day to day activities and these are submitted and form part of the assessment of the subject.

03. Write a professional project plan which includes a market analyses and interpret the findings with reference to the literature in order to set out the scope of their project.

Activities:
Students submit a project plan which sets out the scope and goals of their project and the method by which they plan to achieve their goals. This plan forms part of the assessment.

04. Present results of a technical project to an audience of peers using appropriate technical language. Answer technical verbal question in the context of their chosen project.

Activities:
Students give a mid year project presentation which describes the project they are working on to a group of their peers and to a group of supervising staff. This presentation describes the background to the project, the method that will be used, the progress to date, and the plan for completing it. This presentation forms part of the assessment.
