Subject outline

This subject is designed to establish a knowledge and skill base for pre-service teachers in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, planning, assessment and reporting in Media for students in senior secondary schooling (Year 11-12). In this subject the diverse, dynamic and evolving nature of media and the collection of forms used to inform, communicate with and connect people is explored. The subject is designed to develop understanding of media texts as representations of social, personal and cultural reality, which have been constructed through a process of selection and omission, using media codes and conventions. This study explores a variety of media forms, including audio, audiovisual media, print-based media, digital and interactive media technologies and convergent media processes. Pre-service teachers examine and analyse the relationships between audiences and the media; this analysis is undertaken through a theoretical and practical study that places the pre-service teacher in the role of a media creator.
