Subject outline

This subject introduces and explores visual literacy, in particular filmand picture book representations, through the lens of education and contemporary culture. Students examine media literacy and popular culture around themes where these intersect: media representation of gender and identity. Students develop their critical thinking and analytical skills in cultural studies through readings, online discussions, film (video) screening and guest speakers. Individual and group projects provide the framework for looking at how visual texts position the reader through specific topics( cultural positioning of the'teacher', gender representation) and cultural practices. Students identify inaccurate visual stereo-types and develop message analysis skills though asking critical questions about the representation of (for e.g. gender) specific representations in popular culture.
