Subject outline
In this subject students will examine culture and its foundations, existing cultural variations among Australian students, including accommodation for ESL in schools. Emphasis will be placed on developing understanding and valuing of histories, cultures, traditions, languages and diversity of Indigenous peoples, and the types of education most appropriate to their needs. A key element will be acquiring cultural literacy that entails engaging with Indigenous values and knowledge, and exploring strategies effective with Indigenous students. Australia's economic, social and cultural links with Asia and their educational implications will be examined with a view to developing personal and technical skills to interact effectively with a diverse range of people in a world of complex interdependence. The subject addresses La Trobe's Global Citizenship Essential which entails deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world, being able to recognise the global context of concepts, act across cultures and boundaries, and work with diverse communities.
