Subject outline

This subject examines the relationship between environment and development. Key concepts that are interrogated include sustainable development, ecological modernisation and steady-state capitalism. Particular attention is given to the issues of global warming and population growth. Students will also evaluate the range of policy responses that exist to address environmental problems including administrative, market-based and community-governance responses. The subject regularly includes perspectives on, and perspectives from, the developing world. It is relevant to students in the social sciences, health sciences and business.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Conduct research, including literature review, development of argument and report writing.

Activities:
Students will prepare a major assignment, in which they must synthesise literature on their research subtopic and make an argument.

02. Present an oral assessment of a key issue in environmental sustainability

Activities:
Students will be required to present a 15 minute oral presentation, in which they present a paper focused on a key issue relevant to the subject

03. Produce a sustained complex written argument based on original research and existing literature

Activities:
Students will prepare a major assignment, in which they must synthesise literature on their research subtopic and make an argument.

04. Demonstrate knowledge of major theories and concepts associated with environmental politics and economics

Activities:
Students will participate in tutorial discussions and partake in online learning activities
