Subject outline
In this subject you will learn to recognise and describe healthy structures in the oral cavity and to define their function. You will gain insight into the histology of healthy tissues and structures essential for the understanding oral health and oral disease. You will be able to discuss the structure of the oral mucosa and to describe what constitutes normal mucosal anatomy. You will learn about the processes involved in embryological development of the head and neck and the formation of teeth. You will be introduced to the (oral) microbial flora. You will learn about the dental biofilm and the concept of oral ecological balance and its relationship with oral health. Later you will be able to define oral health and understand the initial symptoms of biofilm-related oral diseases as deviation from normal.
