Subject outline

This subject develops your understanding of evolution of knowledge management and the various technologies that enable and facilitate the creation, storage and dissemination of organisational knowledge. High-level design of knowledge management driven technology-based initiatives like corporate knowledge directories, process documentation, datawarehouses, BI, process automation, workflow; and document management are discussed. Further, knowledge management system technologies including intranets and portals, knowledge management system life cycle, organisational cultural issues in knowledge management projects, knowledge management system deployment and evaluation are also covered. A study tour to explore various implementation of knowledge management in the real industry may be incorporated in this subject.

1. Discuss definition, concepts, history of knowledge management 2. Describe the key roles, responsibilities required for knowledge management applications, knowledge management life-cycle models, process of the KM lifecycle 3. Analyse challenges and benefits of each lifecycle phase, and how individual, group and organisational knowledge is captured, codified, shared, accessed, applied and reused as part of the lifecycle 4. Compare and contrast major knowledge management life-cycle models

Activities:
1. Resolve key tenets of major knowledge management theoretical models implemented in organizations 2. Define and discuss the link of knowledge management frameworks to key KM concepts and the major phases of knowledge cycle 3. Describe complex adaptive systems model of KM and subjective and dynamic nature of content management 4. Explain major techniques used to extract tacit knowledge from subject experts 5. Discuss taxonomic approaches used in classifying captured knowledge, roles and responsibilities in knowledge capture and codification, key components of CoP and its lifecycle, tools and techniques in knowledge sharing, knowledge management architecture, and organizational learning 6. Define and discuss organizational culture, the business context, management of change.

Define different types of knowledge assets, advantages and drawbacks of knowledge management metrics, key KM skills, different roles in a KM team, and CKO 3. Discuss current and future challenges in the field of KM
