Subject outline
Building on the knowledge and practical skills gained in Clinical Audiology A, this subject provides you with an opportunity to consolidate your skills in audiological assessment of adults. Through a combination of off-campus clinical placements and focused workshops, you will develop independence, professionalism and communication skills. You will be provided with an expanded range of casework, including hearing aid assessments and objective techniques. The learnings in this subject will be assessed by examination, portfolio, a written report and assessment at clinical placement.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Demonstrate competence in performing pure tone audiometry, immittance audiometry, speech audiometry and otoacoustic emission testing on adult patients with complex hearing losses.
- Activities:
- Off-campus clinical placement: (i) at-elbow supervision, by a clinical audiologist at an external clinic, with a variety of adult diagnostic and rehabilitation case types, ranging in level of complexity; (ii) student-driven clinic goals will be established prior to each clinic, based on previous feedback, supervisors will provide constructive verbal feedback to students following each clinic, with particular attention paid to the outcome of stated goals; (iii) case reports, will be prepared and submitted, students will select one case for open discussion at a subsequent PBL workshop. Laboratory classes: (i) students will be required to independently conduct eight comprehensive assessments on classmates, a portfolio of audiometric practice tests which will be submitted.
02. Evaluate and select the appropriate clinical tests required to conduct a complex audiological evaluation. Integrate the information from the basic test battery and interprete the results to determine the nature and level of hearing impairment.
- Activities:
- PBL: (i) selected real cases will be shared with the class, with an emphasis on interpretation and integration of results, rehabilitation and case management issues, report-writing and liaising with other health professionals.
03. Demonstrate an understanding of Health Records Act 2001 (Vic), and related privacy principles.
- Activities:
- Independent learning task: (i) students must complete an e-learning course, developed using training material from the Office of the Health Services Commissioner (OHSC), and submit certificate of completion.
04. Demonstrate an awareness of professionalism expected of audiologist.
- Activities:
- Off campus clinical placement: (i) field supervisors will be provided with a formative assessment tool which will detail the goals and expectation levels for the semester, in compliance with the Core Knowledge and Competencies of Master of Audiology Graduates, Audiology Australia. In this subject, in which students will be conducting audiometric tests under direct supervision, supervisors will be asked to provide structured feedback on all aspects of performance at the end of each clinical placement. Laboratory class: (i) giving appropriate patient feedback - a practical discussion and roleplaying exercise.
