Subject outline
This is the first of four clinical practicum subjects. You will develop competence in basic adult audiological assessment through a combination of observation in clinical environments, computer simulations, independent learning and practice assessments, on real clients. You will apply your knowledge of fundamental clinical assessment procedures learned in AUD4IDA (Introduction to Diagnostic Audiology), including history taking, client preparation, otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, acoustic immittance assessment and speech discrimination testing. You will begin to develop the critical and analytical thinking skills required to select appropriate tests, and interpret and integrate findings across the test battery. In addition, you will begin to develop skills in client interaction and professional conduct in a clinical setting. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through skills test and assignment work.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Perform basic pure tone audiometry, immittance audiometry and speech audiometry on a cooperative adult patient.
- Activities:
- Off-campus clinical placement: (i) active observation and case discussion with a qualified clinical audiologist at an external clinic, with a focus on diagnostic assessments of adult clients; (ii) case reports, including de-identified copies of test results, will be prepared for each of the four days of clinical placement and submitted. Students will select one case for open discussion at a subsequent PBL session. Laboratory classes: (i) computer simulation software will be used to practise pure tone audiometry techniques with a focus on masking technique; (ii) you will be required to conduct two comprehensive assessments on classmates under the direct guidance of a clinical educator. 02. Evaluate and select the appropriate clinical tests required to conduct a non-complex audiological evaluation. Integrate the information from the basic test battery and interprete the results to determine the nature and level of hearing impairment.
- Activities:
- PBL: selected real cases will be shared with the class, with an emphasis on patient management issues, interpretation and integration of results, and possible follow-up/management routes.
03. Research and implement infection control procedures in audiology, and demonstrate an understanding of risk factors for infection.
- Activities:
- Laboratory class: a practical demonstration of infection control procedures in audiology. Independent learning task: infection control in audiology.
04. Demonstrate professional expectations in audiology.
- Activities:
