Credit points: 15

Subject outline

The development of generic social work as a profession is addressed; where social workers are located and how they practice. It examines what social workers need to know by introducing students to the theoretical and value base of social work and how social workers intervene in different practice situations. There is emphasis on the systems approach as a useful theoretical foundation for defining approach to practice that addresses the individual's environment and the complex nature of social problems confronted. Students are encouraged to explore the contested nature of social work as part of their ongoing professional development.
