TRANSTIBIAL PROSTHETICS APPLIED

POR5TTA

2016

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject, students will develop the clinical and practical skills to provide a range of transtibial prostheses. Students will apply knowledge and skills in the assessment, casting, fabrications, alignment and evaluation of transtibial prostheses. Students are required to complete projects addressing the assessment, prescription, fabrication and prosthetic management of clients with transtibial amputations. Within this subject, students will apply prosthetic theory, patient assessment skills, anatomy, pathology and biomechanics relevant to transtibial prosthetic management. Students are required to demonstrate effective communication skills with clients and colleagues.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Conduct a client assessment collecting and recording relevant subjective and physical assessment information that might affect the prescription and fabrication of a clinically realistic transtibial prostheses

Activities:
# collect relevant subjective information that may impact on the construction of a transtibial prosthetic prescription. # select clearance tests and more focused detailed lower limb physical assessment performing a range of clinical examinations, tests, measurements and observations in a logical, safe and efficient manner. # record the information in a concise and systematic way that clearly communicates the clinical measurements, facts and observations.

02. Integrate the subjective and physical assessment to provide a comprehensive prosthetic prescription report that meets the specific needs of the amputee client

Activities:
# integrate the assessment data to identify and select transtibial components that meet the functional needs of the amputee client. # be able to formulate and justify a basic prescription and treatment plan that addresses the amputee client's functional needs.

03. Create and evaluate plaster cast impressions of transtibial limb remnants that are suitable to be used for the fabrication of comfortable, functional, weight bearing clinically realistic transtibial prostheses

Activities:
# capture accurate plaster casts of a transtibial limb remnant, representing the shape and loaded tissue areas in the negative socket. # evaluate negative plaster casts to assess its viability, accuracy and likely modifications needed. # modify positive plaster casts in a systematic manner to enable the production of sockets that will fit the limb precisely and comfortably.

04. Integrate client assessment to fabricate clinically realistic transtibial prostheses with bench alignments that are consistent with amputees needs, are safe to manufacture and use and are suitable for the fitting and alignment process

Activities:
# select suitable materials and components to fabricate a safe, functional prosthetic limb. # use materials and equipment in a safe manner to create a transtibial prosthetic limb that can be dynamically aligned. # comply with manufacturers# specifications to produce a transtibial limb that is structurally safe, comfortable and functional for the client with a transtibial amputation to use.

05. Evaluate fit and function of clinically realistic transtibial prosthetic limbs to achieve a well-fitting and functional prosthetic outcome utilising gait analysis, outcome measures and systematic evaluation consistent with clinical practice

Activities:
# evaluate, identify problems and adjust the fit of the transtibial prosthetic socket using basic, well finished material to produce well-fitting prostheses. # evaluate and adjust the alignment of transtibial prostheses to achieve the best functional outcome for the client.
