MEASUREMENT AND OBSERVATION

PHY1MO

2016

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject students will be introduced to the concepts from physics used in other scientific disciplines including the concepts upon which much of modern instrumentation is based. On completion the students will demonstrate competence in the application of the principles of physics covered and an understanding of basic measurement and observation techniques. Topics covered include motion, waves, light and sound, properties of materials, fluids, electricity, and radioactivity.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Describe physical phenomena using accurate terminology to demonstrate understandings of physical principles and SI units.

Activities:
Students are required to produce well articulated responses to descriptive problems in assessed quizzes beginning early in the semester. Students are expected to complete accurate reporting of practical exercises. All reports and solutions presented in SI Units.

02. Express and interpret motion and electrical measurements in mathematical and graphical representations.

Activities:
Demonstration of problem-solving capacity expected in the quizzes and final end of semester examination.

03. Manipulate simple mathematical expressions that describe physical phenomena, including motion, waves and electricity.

Activities:
Demonstration of problem-solving capacity expected in the quizzes and final end of semester examination.

04. Provide coherent interpretations underpinned by appropriate concepts of physics to explain measurements and observations.

Activities:
Students will detail concepts clearly in written solutions, reports and exam questions.
