Subject outline
In this subject, you will develop a sound knowledge base and skills for working with groups and networks that are critical for promoting health. These will include various forms of health consumer groups and networks with objectives aligned with health improvement. Processes for developing and delivering health promotion programs with and for different types of groups will be analysed: formulating objectives, gauging learning styles, developing content, managing and evaluating group processes. You will develop an appreciation of theories and models, processes and practices relevant to group and network learning and for mobilising collective action. You will critically analyse successful models for growing and sustaining networks for health. The concepts of health literacy, health education and empowerment will provide a foundation for this subject.

01. Explain the use of theory concerning groups and networks in health promotion practice.
- Activities:
- You will review literature that describes the development of theory concerning groups and networks. You will then analyse this literature in terms of what is known, what is currently under debate, new ways of thinking about the role and life cycle of groups and networks in health promotion, and how theory helps to explain your professional experiences of groups and networks.
02. Critically examine case examples of networks whose objectives align with health promotion objectives.
- Activities:
- You will research and analyse a group and a network from a number of perspectives: their aims, orgins, how group processes enabling communication and participation are managed, how social media is utilised, and whether (and how) they distribute power of decision making and action.
03. Research and design a group-based health promotion project.
- Activities:
- You will respond to a given health scenario by developing a group based health promotion project.
04. Research and design a health promotion project that involves engaging and working across critical networks.
- Activities:
- You will respond to a given health scenario by developing a health promotion project featuring the formation of connections between networks/network members.
