Subject outline

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Paramedic Practice and Bachelor of Public Health Promotion program are required to undertake clinical placements to develop their professional knowledge, clinical practice and professional behaviours. In this second clinical placement subject, students will have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice, under supervision, in a wider range of clinical and community settings. Students will undertake placements in aged care, rural health and ambulance service settings. These varied clinical experiences will enable students to develop as clinicians within the framework of the Paramedics Australasia Competency Standards for Paramedics. While on clinical placement, students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their clinical skills in the management of patients with chronic and acute health conditions in supervised clinical environments.

01. Use relevant theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to decide on, and justify, the care you provide to patients while supervised within emergency ambulance services, aged care and rural health settings. You will be able to: (a) undertake paramedic clinical tasks and techniques in a supervised emergency ambulance services setting; (b) determine and describe an appropriate paramedic response to a patient's real life emergency situation; (c) competently integrate theory and practice to provide care to patients in an emergency situation while being supervised.

Undertake supervised clinical practice with an ambulance service, aged care facility and a rural health service.

02. Perform as an effective and responsible team member and work, under supervision, with paramedics and other health care professionals to provide appropriate patient care within emergency ambulance services, aged care and rural health settings. You will be able to (a) describe and assess the operational setting for paramedics in the community and the emergency health system; (b) apply independent work and team skills in an integrated manner in a variety of situations and teams in a workplace setting; (c) perform an effective patient handover to and from related emergency services and primary health care teams.

03. Recognise, and perform, your role and responsibilities in emergency ambulance services, aged care and rural health settings under supervision. You will be able to: (a) integrate those statutes, legislation and public policies that guide clinical practice for a paramedic into your practice; (b) identify the social and ethical principles and standards of practice in use in clinical settings, by evaluating personal and organisational characteristics and strategies; (c) display professional demeanours and leadership capabilities required of a beginning paramedic; (d) identify and apply a culturally sensitive approach to your own reactions, and to those of patients and their families, to chronic and acute illness or injury experienced in clinical settings.

04. Assimilate information and communicate it clearly as appropriate for emergency ambulance services, aged care and rural health settings. You will be able to: (a) determine and integrate the most appropriate communication technologies and media to utilise in these clinical settings; (b) interpret complex information into an appropriate mode to inform others with specific needs and context; (c) use contextually sensitive written and oral skills to engage others in effective communication; (d) develop and present concise and thorough explanations that are relevant and appropriately targeted for patients or colleagues as needed.

05. Critically reflect on and review your clinical practice to determine, and put in place, strategies for improvement. You will be able to: (a) generate a reflective journal during your clinical practice; (b) identify suitable resources and learning experiences to maintain your learning needs relevant to the emergency ambulance services, aged care and rural health clinical environments; (c) negotiate opportunities to undertake learning experiences within the clinical setting.

Complete a reflective essay on the role of paramedics in the aged care and/or rural health settings.
