THE ROMAN WORLD: MYTH AND EMPIRE
MDS1TRW
2016
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject introduces students to the society, literature and art of ancient Rome through its major historical and literary figures such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus, Nero, Virgil and Ovid. We look at relationships with other Mediterranean societies such as Carthage, Egypt and Gaul; issues like slavery and gender roles; and entertainment such as ancient comedy and the gladiatorial games. While Rome is the focus of our study, we consider what the significant remains at Pompeii and other Roman towns can tell us about this ancient civilisation. We shall also look forward to the way in which Rome is now depicted on screen and in novels and video games, such as HBO's series Rome, Robert Graves' I, Claudius and Rome: Total War, with students allowed to choose one modern text for detailed study.
