Subject outline

Do we consider ourselves leaders and in what way do research and leadership go hand in hand? Students enrolled in 'The Emerging Researcher' will be introduced to the concept of leadership and the practices of research. The subject includes completing leadership training, formulating a research question that has relevance to students' own lives and interests, and searching for and critically assessing information. Throughout the subject, students will have opportunities to learn more about the research undertaken at La Trobe and meet and work with top staff and students.While familiarising students with the basics of research(ing) in an academic and non-academic context, this subject also introduces students to a range of transferable leadership theories. Completion of the first stage of the La Trobe Leadership Award Module (LTLA) as part of this subject will partly qualify students to apply for a La Trobe Leadership Award at the end of the year.

01. Demonstrate a critical reading of different sources of information

Activities:: Library workshops on assessing credibility of information sources, feedback on an annotated bibliography

02. Engage with researchers from the La Trobe Research Focus Areas looking at 'Big Ideas'

Activities:: Seminar program (including Q&A) with top RFA researchers

03. Select and clearly explain a relevant research question, including identifying potential benefits from researching this question

Activities:: Examples modelled in class; Team discussions on research topics and identifying scope and benefits of research

04. Conduct a structured review of the relevant literature in a given field

Activities:: Library workshops plus feedback and discussion on previously submitted annotated bibliography

05. Confidently pose questions and challenge ideas

Activities:: Student teams chair seminars from researchers, including asking questions of presenter. The teaching team will model this for the first seminars.

06. Work in a team to provide constructive peer feedback to other teams

Activities:: Student teams will provide brief feedback to other teams on their seminar hosting and questioning of presenters, after modelling from teaching staff.
