Subject outline

In this subject students will examine representations of Parisian urban living spaces in 19th and 20th century novels from Zola to Perec, analysing the intersection between urban and domestic life, their narrative structures and the construction of novelistic space. Students will be introduced to the architectural, literary and urban histories of Paris through a detailed study of Emile Zola's Pot-Bouille and Georges Perec's La Vie mode d'emploi.
