Subject outline

Structural analysis and design are tasks fundamental to Civil Engineering, and this subject deals with these two aspects. The analysis section of the subject examines topics such as stress and strain, transformation of stress and strain in two dimensions, principal stresses and strains, Mohr's circle, stress-strain relationships, linear and non-linear behaviour, deflections of beams, strain energy, energy theorems, the behaviour of short and long columns, buckling, and an introduction to elastic-plastic analysis. The design section of the subject introduces the various types of structural forms, the current philosophy for the design of structures, and the loads that they are required to resist. This is followed by a discussion of the behaviour and detailed design of structural elements from steel and timber and their associated connections.
