This subject will introduce students to more advanced aspects of molecular genetics and analysis, including genomics and DNA sequencing; analysis of gene expression, and proteomics. The emphasis is on the genome as a whole, rather than at the level of the gene.

01. Describe the approaches used to sequence various whole genomes, and the methods used to screen genomes for particular sequences and to measure gene expression.

Activities:

02. Describe the assessment of gene expression at the single gene level, and then expand to the screening of large numbers of genes simultaneously.

Activities:
Methods for the assessment of gene expression will be presented in lectures and reinforced in tutorials. Understandin g will be assessed in the mid-semester and final examinations.

03. Describe the separation and purification of cellular proteins, and how the total complement of cellular proteins varies with various circumstances.

Activities:
Protein purification methods and processes involved in assessing protein functin will be presented in lectures and reinforced in tutorials. Understanding will be assessed in the mid-semester and final examinations.
