Subject outline

Communication of information and the critical evaluation of data are central to scientific progress. In this subject you will develop or enhance your skills in order to be able to effectively appraise and collate information and communicate it via a variety of writing styles. The subject consists of a number of tutorials or workshops with two short assignments to be completed in class and two scientific reviews on topics of your own choosing. Students will receive individual guidance from staff supervisors in the planning and the preparation of their written work.

01. At the end of this subject, students should be able to: Write literature reviews that collate and summarise information and critically appraise scientific literature

Activities:
Three sessions given by FSTE ALLU on how to write a review, including collating, summarizing and critical thinking skills. A library run session on database searching. Students choose review topics from a list or suggest their own topic(s).

02. Effectively participate in staff/student consultations

Activities:
Expectations of the staff consultation process outlined, including the types of meeting preparation required by the student at different points in the research/writing process. Students are assessed on prepardeness (e.g. relevant journal articles found, review plan, draft) and/or application of previous feedback (e.g. more appropriate articles, improvement to review draft or part thereof). Three sessions given by FSTE ALLU on how to write a review, including collating, summarizing and critical thinking skills. A library run session on database searching.

03. Write short pieces of text for different audiences

Activities:
During ALLU sessions different writing styles discussed. A session run by the LTU Media and Communication unit on how to talk to the press (media presentation skills). Sessions run by invited speakers, e.g. Careers centre.
