Subject outline

This subject develops an understanding of the contemporary arts directly from the suite of summer exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria. Students will be exposed to the fashion world of Jean Paul Gaultier, the existential dysfunction of renowned Glasgow based artist David Shrigley, the photographic/cinematic works of US based Alex Prager, the psychological public works of Carsten Holler and Australian artists Robert jacks, Emily Floyd and Mambo. Through these diverse artists, themes and concepts of identity, gender, sexuality, popular culture, transgression and the absurd, humanism, existentialism, public/private will be explored. Students will be taught at the NGV by NGV curatorial and Education staff, exhibiting artists and Faculty academics. The 6 days of required attendance at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne are 2nd, 3rd and 4th February and 9th, 10th and 11th February. There are two optional days scheduled on 5th and 12th February for the purpose of visiting gallery exhibitions.
