Subject outline
In this subject students explore the impacts of poverty and inequality on individuals and communities locally and globally. Poverty is one form of inequality which is used to illustrate the structural foundations of inequality and its consequences for individuals, families and communities. Other forms of inequality are also analysed. Individual and societal understandings of social issues and public policy responses related to the impact of inequality and its prevention are explored. Concepts of social justice, rights and inclusions are utilised to analyse conditions of inequality and the role of social work. In particular students will explore the actions taken in human service organisations through their services to address inequality including interventions, research, advocacy and social action. Upon successful completion of this subject you should be able to: 1. Analyze the impacts of poverty and inequality on individuals, families and communities in Australia and identify a range of policy responses and perspectives that have been implemented to address these issues 2. Demonstrate knowledge of how inequality and poverty are manifested in Australian society and present a critical analysis of the causes, impacts and consequences based on available data. 3. Identify the key issues confronting the worlds poorest nations and the responses made to these issues.
