CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE AND NEUROPSYCHOLOGY
PSY3CNN
2015
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
This subject will explore theoretical approaches to neural systems and processes relevant to a wide range of normal conscious and unconscious behaviour, and behavioural pathologies, and will provide training in the issues of contemporary cognitive neuroscience. In particular the subject will focus on clinically related aspects of neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, traumatic brain injury and sensory disorders, as well as nutritional and emotional neuroscience. Students will be introduced to neuroscientific aspects of a number of common testing procedures underlying theoretical approaches to professional practice as part of the tutorial program. The major assignment is aimed at introducing students to developing policy making as used by government departments.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Use concepts and major theories of neuroscience and neuropsychology to describe & interpret the impact of natural disasters on mental health phenomena and apply this understanding to develop a government report.
- Activities:
- Students will explore the impact of psychological and physiological stress arising from natural disasters such as bushfires and floods from a neuroscientific perspective in lectures and tutorials that will lead to the independent writing of a policy report. Formative Feedback: Tutorial Discussion Formative and Summative Feedback: Disaster Response Mental Health Policy
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Critical Thinking(Critical Thinking)
- Discipline-specific GCs(Discipline-specific GCs)
- Inquiry/ Research(Inquiry/ Research)
- Writing(Writing)
- Creative Problem-solving(Creative Problem-solving)
02. Apply knowledge of the neural function and neuropsychological classification criteria related to both normal and abnormal behaviour and mental processes to critically assess adequacy of such criteria in the context of modern neuroscientific research.
- Activities:
- Tutorial discussion will centre on examination of neuroscientific literature introduced in lectures, and neuropsychological assessment tools presented in tutorials, to examine their ability to characterise both normal and abnormal function. Formative Feedback: Tutorial Discussion Summative Feedback: Exam questions

03. Deliver a group presentation evaluating the neuroscientific bases of clinical diagnosis and treatment for a particular psychopathology.
- Activities:
- In groups, students will select from a number of topics presented in lectures and develop a discussion and display poster with an associated in-class presentation. Formative and Summative Feedback: Group Presentation with group mark
