Subject outline
This subject is concerned with integrated health promotion - a contemporary approach to acting on determinants of health through a mix of interventions and capacity building strategies. Students examine theoretical frameworks that underpin an integrated health promotion approach. Three types of case studies will provide you with insight into how to design a mix of health promotion interventions and capacity building strategies to achieve change: (i) elemental settings (schools, hospitals/other health care facilities, community locations and groups, retail facilities, markets, prisons); (ii) contextual settings (cities, communities, islands, villages); and (iii) healthy public policy and health in all policies. You will also assess and justify responses to key issues in implementing integrated health promotion approaches: applying interventions in complex systems; growing multidisciplinary teams, partnerships, networks and conditions for success; and mobilising/sustaining leadership.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Compare and contrast the major theoretical frameworks that underpin integrated health promotion perspectives and strategies, the World Health Organisation Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and subsequent health promotion frameworks.
- Activities:
- You will review selected literature that describes the development of major theoretical frameworks. You will compare and contrast them and develop a timeline of the development of the frameworks.
02. Interpret and discuss key issues in integrated health promotion: complex systems; growing multidisciplinary teams, partnerships, networks and conditions for success; and mobilising and sustaining leadership.
- Activities:
- You will review selected literature and resource materials that explain the key concepts, and asked to interpret them.
03. Analyse and discuss contemporary policy debates in relation to using a settings approach to health promotion.
- Activities:
- You will review and analyse selected materials. You will be asked to post original contributions to online blogs that are responses to these materials and discuss them with other students.
04. Critically evaluate real world case studies of integrated health promotion.
- Activities:
- You will critically examine selected case examples of integrated health promotion applied in a community context.
05. Develop plans for evidence-informed integrated health promotion approaches to improving the health of a specified population group in relation to a specific health concern.
- Activities:
- You will synthesise the foundation material covered in this subject to gain understanding of how to plan an original integrated health promotion approach within set parameters (for example, demography, location and capacity of a community, nature of health determinants and health problems in the community).
