PARAMEDIC MANAGEMENT MEDICAL A
PAR4PMA
2015
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject, students will develop an understanding of the underpinning pathophysiology relating to commonly encountered clinical problems of a cardiac and/or respiratory nature (chronic, acute and life threatening). Practical skills and theoretical knowledge will be combined with clinical problems solving and decision-making competencies within this subject. Students will assess, plan the management of, and monitor patients presenting with a variety of cardiac and respiratory conditions of a medical nature. Communication techniques appropriate to patient presentations will also be identified and developed.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Individually and as part of a team, assimilate information to communicate effectively with patients presenting with medical conditions of a cardiac or respiratory nature.
- Activities:
- Scenarios and role play. You will be able to: (a) generate appropriate approaches to, and critically appraise, the effectiveness of patient communication; (b) identify and describe the psychological and physical effect that acute and chronic medical conditions may have on a patient's ability to communicate effectively; (c) devise and use patient interaction strategies and therapeutic communication techniques for conveying information of a distressing or sensitive nature; (d) formulate means by which communication may take place in challenging environments, and apply these in a range of simulated settings.
- Related graduate capabilities and elements:
- Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing,Speaking)
02. Individually, and as part of a team, construct and perform comprehensive assessments of patients with cardiac and/or respiratory conditions in a variety of simulated settings.
- Activities:
- Simulated case studies and scenarios. Whole-of-class case studies. You will be able to: (a) follow, and provide a rationale for the use of, effective systematic patient assessment procedures; (b) competently integrate theory and practice to identify appropriate methods of patient assessment given specific patient presentations, and implement this assessment in a timely manner; (c) use a suitable technique to conduct a thorough patient history, judge its effectiveness and modify, as appropriate, to specific patient presentations; (d) negotiate, as part of a team, to perform a complete primary, secondary and vital signs survey on a simulated patient in a timely manner.
03. Individually and as a team, judge a patient's cardiac and/or respiratory condition using a paramedic decision making Process.
- Activities:
- Scenarios and written case studies within workbook. You will be able to: (a) describe the pathophysiology of cardiac and respiratory conditions and relate this pathophysiology to patient presentation and symptoms; (b) using theoretical knowledge and evidence-based practice, justify the out-of-hospital management of patient conditions of a cardiac or respiratory nature, and apply this management to simulated presentations; (c) correctly identify differential diagnoses for medical patients presenting with conditions of a cardiac and/or respiratory nature, and formulate a treatment plan based on the patient's condition; (d)describe and apply the principles of electrocardiograph interpretation to critique the patient's
04. Individually and as a team, manage, monitor and reassess patients with cardiac and respiratory conditions.
