Subject outline

Students are introduced to the practical aspects of print journalism production, from developing editorial skills to page layout and basic design considerations. Students work in teams to create a mock-up magazine, moving from the basic concept to production using industry-standard software Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Students are also given opportunities to develop and hone their writing, research, editing and sub-editing skills. No special design skills are required to undertake this subject.

Activities:
In weekly workshops students are introduced to the industry standard software used in the production of magazines and will be guided through the potential pitfalls and challenges of creating print products.

02. On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to apply and display writing news and feature-writing skills in the production of a magazine.

Activities:
Weekly lectures will be devoted to advanced writing and research skills and extensive feedback will be provided on assignments.

03. On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify, evaluate and synthesise newsworthy information.

Activities:
Weekly lectures introduce students to the kinds of information that will enable them to write, edit and design compelling stories, while reinforcing their sense of story form. This is reinforced through exercises in class and feedback on assessment tasks.

04. On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify, evaluate and synthesise publication design and practice.

05. On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to interpret and evaluate information from primary and archival sources and construct this into news narratives.

Activities:
Weekly lectures will be devoted to advanced journalistic research skills and will be required to source interview subjects and locate appropriate archival sources in the writing of news and feature articles for assessment. Students are also introduced to the considerations that go in to the production of a print product and are guided through printing and typesetting terminology and technologies.

06. On successful completion of this subject, students should have demonstrated the skills necessary to organise themselves and co-ordinate their efforts in collaborating in the production of a magazine.

Activities:
Production of a magazine prototype; students will work jointly on a proposal and in the production of a final printed product along with peer assessment.
