We live in a world of nations. But this has not always been so. This subject investigates two centuries of change since the late eighteenth century. How and when did nations arise? What did they mean for men and women? How did conceptions of liberty and equality form modern citizenship? How did women and imperial subjects struggle for participation? How can we imagine a global citizenship today? We analyse these questions through three European nations and their empires. Students will learn to employ key concepts in an argument, integrate evidence and primary sources in historical analyses; and engage in histriographical debates.
