Subject outline
The range of communication disorders considered in this subject include stuttering, cleft palate, autism, deafness, hearing loss, otitis media in indigenous populations, communication after a stroke, and other hearing disorders. Through lectures/interviews, online resources and group work, you will learn about treatments, stigma, history and the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. You will also learn about the emergent roles of Speech Pathologists and Audiologists, their professional innovations and engagement in developing countries. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through your online lecture/interview notes, a written report and exam.

01. Understand, discuss and describe the impact of a communication disorder
- Activities:
- Students will submit one-750 word individual report that discusses a communication disorder
02. Investigate and explain current information on the incidence, treatment innovations and community attitudes to a range of communication disorders. You will understand, discuss and describe the history of speech pathology and audiology community attitudes to the treatment of a range of communication disorders.
- Activities:
- Students will work collaboratively in groups of 6-7 members to investigate a given communication disorder(allocated at the start of this subject), including detail about the history of and community attitude to the disorder
03. Communicate key topics in this subject, using collaborative authoring software.
- Activities:
- Students in groups of 6-7 members will produce a website which showcases information about their given communication disorder (allocated at the start of this subject)
04. Understand, discuss and describe the impact of a communication disorder
- Activities:
- Students will undertake a 1.5 online exam which test their understanding of the 9 communication disorders presented in the subject.
