Subject outline

In this subject students will have the opportunity to build on the clinical skills attained during the third year in all areas of clinical practice pertaining to adult and child patients. Students will further develop their treatment planning skills while on clinical placement, and will provide patients with general restorative care, periodontal therapy and maintenance, children's dentistry, removable prosthodontics (complete and partial dentures), fixed prosthodontics (indirect restorations) and adult exodontia. In addition, students will commence simple endodontic cases which will be further developed with more complex cases in the fifth year. Clinical experience will be obtained at public clinics in Bendigo, Mildura, Wodonga, Ballarat and Melton.

01. Evaluate gathered clinical information and interpret patients' problems to formulate diagnoses and differential diagnoses for a range of dental procedures.

Activities:
Students will treat patients from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Each patient will receive a thorough examination and appropriate diagnostic tests to formulate a diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Students will discuss and justify the differential diagnosis/diagnosis with their clinical supervisor.

02. Formulate a comprehensive treatment plan including referral plan, where appropriate, to meet patients' needs.

Activities:
Students will formulate a comprehensive treatment plan and discuss and justify this plan with clinical supervisors and patients and guardians.

03. Treat a range of complex dental problems including dental procedures in general restorative care, periodontal therapy and maintenance, endodontic care, exodontia, removable and fixed prosthodontics and children's dentistry.

Activities:
Students will undertake a variety of clinical procedures on a variety of patients. Clinical demonstrators will supervise their approach and offer feedback in the student's online clinical logbook. Students will be encouraged to self-reflect on their clinical performance. The logbook and clinical competencies will record students' progress.
