ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC AUDIOLOGY 1: OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES IN AUDIOLOGY

AUD5ADA

2015

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This course builds upon the foundations of Audiological diagnostic measures. You will be introduced to additional procedures used in objective measurements of hearing and site-of-lesion testing in audiology, specifically auditory evoked potential measurements. Through lectures and workshops, you will learn about the origin of otoacoustic emissions and acoustically evoked potentials of the auditory pathway, including electrocochleography, auditory brainstem responses, middle and late latency potentials, and auditory steady state responses. You will also learn about pathologies involving the central auditory system, and the role of objective assessment strategies and imaging technologies in neuro-otology. Building on this theoretical knowledge, you will develop skills in interpreting the results from these measures, as well as integrating the results of these objective techniques with behavioural tests used in audiological evaluations to form clinical recommendations. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through written assignments and an examination.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Integrates and consolidates theoretical information on the anatomical and physiological principles underpinning objective assessment techniques in audiology.

Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination

02. Critically designs, evaluates and reviews the protocols and procedures for oto-acoustic emission and auditory evoked response measurement and is able to apply this knowledge in applying sound clinical decision-making and trouble-shooting.

Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination.

03. Integrates and consolidates information from objective tests with behavioural tests in the overall audiological test battery, interprets the results of these tests to differentially diagnose various hearing disorders and is able to apply this knowledge in applying sound clinical decision-making and trouble-shooting

Activities:
- Lecture and workshop classes- Components of a written examination - PBL workshop: students will be provided with case files containing results of both subjective and objective test results. Students will integrate the findings from across the test battery, discuss possible pathologies and identify any further information required for differential diagnosis.

04. Synthesizes knowledge of pathologies involving the central auditory system, and the role of objective techniques in the differential diagnosis of central auditory disorders.

Activities:
- Lectures - Additional information (readings, websites) provided on LMS - Components of a written examination.
