Subject outline
This subject will be delivered fully on-line. In this subject students will explore why science communitcation poses difficulties for the media and often leads to under-reporting or misrepresentation. Integrating scientific and media perspectives through a case study approach, Science in the Media will explore these issues of representation offering: an overview of scientific method, analysis of the role of uncertainty in science; ways in which significance in scientific research findings is interpolated; along with an overview of key elements of media practice for different platforms including -news values, production values, narrative structure and popular culture formats, and the influence of public relations.
