Subject outline
We have entered an era of migration and mobility. Millions of people travel around the world, seeking new opportunities and experiences or fleeing from past persecutions and problems. What does all of this travel and movement tell us about the modern world? How does it affect individuals, families, communities and nations? How do people create a sense of home and stability out of continuous movement? How does the travel of tourists, migrants and workers transform and stretch old connections, and how and when does it create new relationships, intimacies, conflicts and identities? In this subject we explore the impact of movement on social life and belonging in the contemporary world. We examine rich ethnographic case studies that describe the lives of those who move, and consider what these stories tell us about the age of migration.
