Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this subject students are introduced to the elements of an interpersonal approach to psychological therapy with an emphasis on forming a durable working alliance, and developing a formulation of the client's issues and problems through paying close attention to the relational issues that arise during the course of therapy. Special topic focus will be on appropriate handling of difficult and painful emotions in the client, 'tear and repair' in therapy, developing the capacity to share process comments with the client in a therapeutically productive way, and case formulation using CCRT (Core Conflictual Relational Themes) method. These aspects of therapy will be demonstrated and explored through the use of role play, the viewing of video material, and through the recording of 'real' and 'practice' sessions of therapy.
