Subject outline

In this subject students examine the development and nature of Australian political culture from the late nineteenth century to the present-day. They are introduced to major events and issues in Australian politics including the political assumptions of British settlers during the colonial period, evolving relations between settlers and indigenous people, the federation movement, the establishment of the Australian Settlement, Australia's relationship with Britain and the Empire from the First to the Second World War, and the role and impact of specific governments from that of Barton's protectionists in 1901 to Gillard Labor in 2013. Students will evaluate the immediate and enduring impact of these developments on Australia's evolving political culture. Assessment aims to consolidate and measure students' analytical, research and communications skills.
