Subject outline

In this subject students examine (i) theory and practice of the assessment of cultural heritage significance; and (ii) protection and conservation of places of cultural heritage significance. Using case studies and field work, students develop skills in the assessment of heritage significance, in the supervision of heritage studies and in the formulation and implementation of local policies, guidelines and planning controls for places of cultural heritage significance. Topics include: sources and methodologies for researching significance; criteria used for assessing significance; preparing listing proposals for buildings, structures and precincts; and preparation and administration of appropriate local policies and overlay controls in planning schemes.
