Credit points: 15

Subject outline

This subject considers the application of counselling approaches to common mental health issues (eg. depression, anxiety, trauma) and complex case presentations. Drawing from current research on evidence-based practice, this subject will help students develop competence in validated approaches such as CBT, Interpersonal Therapies and Mindfulness in relation to working with mental health issues, as well as reviewing other established and emerging approaches. A critical analysis of the limitations of an evidence-based approach will be considered and the importance of common factors will be explored. Students will be expected to be able to assess their own approach to counselling in the light of current findings.
