Subject outline
Within this subject students will focus upon bioethical principles (Module 1), issues and decisions within the clinical context (Module 2) and the public health arena (Module 3) that affect patients, families, health care staff and health care organisations. Students will initailly explore traditional ethical foundations but predominantly focus on more contemporary bioethical principles. Bioethical issues relevant to clinical and public health contexts will be discussed, exploring a number of practical examples (eg: organ transplantation, euthanasia, etc), as well as the professional role of allied health practioners, nurses, dentists and medical professionals. Bioethical issues affecting health care organisations, administrators and government policy will also be considered.
