Subject outline

In this subject students will be introduced to the concept of mental illness and the implications for families of the mentally ill person and broader community. Therapeutic and psychosocial interventions are discussed within the context of the broad socio-cultural environment. The student will gain an understanding of mental illness, diagnostic categories, the treatment and services available, particularly in Victoria, consumer and carer perspectives, indigenous issues and the legislative frameworks that guide service delivery patterns. Students will explore collaborative interdisciplinary care, combining general nursing care with a specific mental health nursing specialisation and develop a set of basic skills to enable them provision of recovery focused care.
