Subject outline
In this subject students will be introduced to the skills, knowledge and techniques required by nurses in the provision of person-centred care for the individual experiencing episodic illness that requires a surgical intervention. The subject emphasis is on both the care surrounding minor surgical procedures and the safety and well being of patients. Case studies dealing with health priority areas in Victoria and participation in care of perioperative patients will be used to promote further understanding of: (a) The manifestations and pathopysiology of episodic illness; (b) Care issues surrounding the perioperative process; (c) Risk and therapeutic management; (d) The cultural and social aspects of care.

Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in one of the following courses: HSBNC, HSBNCW, BEBND2, HBNCP, HBNCM, HBNPRG, HBNPGW, BEBN2, HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN, HBNP, RBNP, HSBNW, HZNM and HZNMD. For students enrolled in HBN, HBNM, HBNUP, HBNPRW, RBN - Bachelor of Nursing or HZNM or HZNMD-Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery then must pass NSG1ENC and HBS1HBA and HBS1HBB.
