THE COMPLEX NEONATE

MID4TCN

2014

Credit points: 20

Subject outline

In this subject students will revisit the beginnings of life from conception through to the first 28-days following birth and build on their earlier theoretical and clinical experiences of the normal newborn. They will encounter and learn to recognise the conditions associated with an 'at risk infant' and gain the necessary knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care for the 'at risk', sick or premature infant. Issues relating to parenting for healthy infants and infants who have complex needs due to pathology will be explored and students will build on their interpersonal skills when examining concepts of attachment, grief and loss. The relationships between maternal conditions and their effects on the infant, and the impact of the birth of a premature or abnormal infant on the health industry, the local community and society are also considered.
