Subject outline

This subject provides students with an introduction to many important issues and events in Italy from the postwar years through to the present. It focuses on how humour and satire have been used by Italian writers, directors and performers as an avenue for contributing critically and productively to social and cultural debates in the country. The primary texts examined will include films, music and literature; secondary readings will provide the necessary background on the social, historical nad cultural context. All texts will be available in English translation. Students undertaking the subject at second-year level will complete all assessment in English; third-year students will be expected to complete assessment in Italian.
