SPEECH AND HEARING SCIENCES
HCS3SHS
2014
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
Scientific advances over the course of the twentieth century have resulted in numerous specialised techniques for investigating sound, speech and hearing. These techniques, introduced in HCS3SHS, draw on key concepts from basic acoustics and the physics of objects in motion (also covered in HCS3SHS). They include analysis of sound waves and speech, the psychology of sound perception, as well as techniques for gauging hearing ability and hearing loss. The overall aim of HCS3SHS is to enable students to explain perceptual, acoustic, aerodynamic and physiological aspects of the speech signal in terms of relevant basic science and also gain the knowledge needed to liaise as professionals with sound technicians and engineers.
