Subject outline

Building on their studies in year 1, students will begin to acquire the knowledge necessary to practice competently as speech pathologists and audiologist. In this subject students describe the principles and mechanisms underlying normal communication (hearing, speech and language) and swallowing across the lifespan. Students acquire knowledge in the following areas: models of human communication and swallowing; the contribution of basic sensory, perceptual and cognitive processes to communication; the structural and functional components of communication and swallowing. Students also explore the scope of speech pathology and audiology practice.
