Subject outline
The aim of the subject is to examine the state of the discipline (English; Literary Criticism and Theory) at the present time. Emphasis is mainly on developments in theory and practice since the 1970s, via a study of articles in The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism. These articles will be what is chiefly discussed from week to week. Assignments will also be based on this material, though you will often be allowed/invited/encouraged to range more widely. The lectures won't always focus directly on the articles in the Norton. By the end of the subject, you should have gained more skill and confidence in reading contemporary criticism and you should have moved towards your own reasoned positions on certain of its main tendencies and problems. You should have a basic knowledge of the field of contemporary literary criticism and theory and should be equipped for fourth year work, should you be admitted into fourth year honours.
