ENG1ILS
2014
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject students are introduced to a wide range of short stories from diverse cultures and historical periods. Students are also introduced to more general issues of literary criticism and ways of reading, with an emphasis on issues such as gender, race, and identity. We study the short story in a historical context but also look at the structure of the short story as a specific literary form, and at genres and styles such as the gothic tale, the ghost story, fairytales, the modernist and postmodernist story.
