Subject outline
Applied Learning (with connections to service learning or community service) can be defined as a teaching/learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning, personal growth and civic responsibility. In this subject students increase their knowledge and awareness of community assets, issues and models of community building and effective school community relations. The vehicle for developing this learning is an applied learning portfolio where students reflect on their volunteer or paid capacity experiences (for example after school care program coordinator, teacher or integration aide, tutoring, sports coaching, youth at risk program, school camp worker) undertaken prior to the completion of their course. Students are encouraged to build their critical thinking abilities in order to be productive citizens with the social responsibility and skills to be advocates of social justice.
