Subject outline

In this subject, students are introduced to the theoretical concepts and underlying values relating to an increasingly diverse and changing society. The focus in the subject is on the intersection of community, society, and contemporary schooling practices, and positioning students to more fully understand the role of schooling and of teachers within broader communities. Students consider local and global issues and, in particular, the impact of diversity, poverty and equity issues on children's schooling experiences. Through structured opportunities to initiate and engage in a community service-learning project, students are encouraged to identify their underlying beliefs, explore their values and attitudes, and reflect on these factors in relation to their roles as teachers. They build on their knowledge of what is meant by an inclusive society, and begin to comprehend the many challenges and opportunities facing teachers in their efforts to support all children to excel.
