Subject outline
This subject will examine different approaches to fieldwork with particular reference to development. It will deal with both the theoretical and applied aspects of fieldwork in different socioeconomic and cultural contexts and thereby provide a multidisciplinary understanding of development work. The major focus of the subject will be upon various methods involved in conducting fieldwork for development project, which cover both qualitative and quantitative approaches such as participant observation, ethnographic research, interview, focus group, use of official statistics and analysis of survey datasets. Students will gain valuable experience in doing research design, practicing research ethics and strategies, developing critical thinking of diverse field methods, and writing reports.
