Subject outline

The audiological assessment of young children requires specialised clinical knowledge and skills. In this course you will be provided with a broad understanding of the principles underlying the assessment and clinical management of neonates, infants and children. Through lectures, you will learn about normal child development, causes of hearing loss in children, and the impact of childhood hearing impairment. You will learn about newborn hearing screening programmes, aimed at identifying hearing loss as early in life as possible. You will learn about behavioural and objective assessment techniques used in screening and diagnostic paediatric audiology. Through a series of workshops, you will develop skills in behavioural assessments including Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) and Play Audiometry, and objective physiological assessments, including otoacoustic emissions and immittance testing. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through written exams and lab reports.
